Our challenge

Cala. A timeless step forward in ergonomic care

Seniorcare is a geriatric furniture brand and a pioneer in its sector in its commitment to design, which is why we wanted our two decades of experience in ergonomic design to be embodied in a piece that would provide optimum comfort and functionality in homes, residences and geriatric homes.

Cala armchair had to be a versatile piece of furniture, far removed from the typical chairs for the elderly, with a transversal use that would fit perfectly in any space, and whose aesthetics would not be associated with hospital environments but with the home. 

With the appearance of new spaces dedicated to the care and attention of this group, a design was needed that would maintain the functional and ergonomic requirements of the residential sector, but with an aesthetic refinement that would bring visual well-being to the user. It also had to show empathy for patients, caregivers and cleaning personnel while being functional in a wide array os spaces: bedrooms, living spaces, staff and clinical spaces…

The impact

A harmonious balance of form and function

Cala armchair has a timeless air, evoking classic Danish design and Nordic elegance. Inspired by the delicacy of a flower that envelops and embraces, like an enveloping and welcoming gesture.

Every detail has been designed to transmit serenity in a product available in three heights. The footrest, which replicates the gestures of the armchair, integrates harmoniously and is simple and easy to move. 

The wooden arm section enhances the quality of the product with a level of detail typical of contract furniture, while the treatment of the top-quality beech wood reflects the care and warmth of a domestic product. High-density foam guarantees comfort and durability.

As a novelty, in the transfer version, the Cala armchair incorporates a convertible legrest, from which a footrest comes out, making the user's transfer more comfortable.

Elevating senior care with thoughtful design

In creating the Cala armchair, we have sought to combine beauty, durability and functionality, something that has not historically been considered for the elderly population segment. 

The user is the core, not the afterthought. Thus, the armchair meets all the technical requirements of geriatric centres and senior living facilities  and offers advanced design, high ergonomics and visual well-being. With its Wingback armchair version, Cala improved the head support and generates privacy in open spaces. So users can find the comfort that they need.

In this sense, at Alegre Design we have carefully worked on the ergonomics to improve the experience of both the user and the caregivers, creating an armchair that facilitates interaction and improves day-to-day comfort.
